Gili Air
Gili Air: a tiny Indonesian island in the Indian Ocean
The island so small you can walk around it in about 1.5 hours. No cars, no fuel engine motorbikes. Only horse carriages and bicycles. Surrounded by the ocean you can feel really close to nature there.
Not much to do, only a few bars and restaurants. A couple of Hollywood stars who used to be famous a few decades ago.
Everything becomes so simple when there's so little around. The perfect place to just be.
Somewhere on the Indian Ocean
Tranquility, sunshine and the ocean
Somewhere between the islands
All the waste left behind by the tourists can be a huge issue for such a small island. This island offers free water re-fills to avoid a build up of plastic bottles, but only some use it. I've seen a boat filled up with just waste plastic bottles being set away. Where? To another island, a bigger island.
In a place like this you become very aware of all the rubbish you leave behind as a tourist. Snack, drink packaging, and what not.
If you can, take it back with you. If you don't, they will have to send it somewhere or burn it...
Frequent earthquakes in the Gili Islands make straw roofs the best solution. Brick and concrete can be deathly. Many people are still living there in hats made of straw. I haven't taken any photos of those, as it felt too intrusive, there was always someone around.

Swimming and snorkeling
Coral reef snorkeling is possible here right off the island's beach!

The photo I haven't taken
One of the most beautiful photos I've never taken comes from this little island. It was probably the most beautiful swimming experience as well.
I went for a morning swim in the ocean before breakfast. While swimming, at some point I noticed, I was surrounded by a swarm of tiny jellyfish. Smaller than a penny coin, transparent with black spots. Hundreds of them. We swam together for a while in the morning sun.
