Anahuacalli - Diego Rivera's collection
A stunning collection of pre-Columbian art
Anahuacalli is a less visited museum in Coyoacan, Mexico City, which I cannot recommend enough seeing it, if you're visiting the town.
The building was designed by Rivera, influenced by the Mayan and Aztec styles, built with carved volcanic stones. Very impressive out and inside.
The collection shows Rivera's life-long love for cultural artifacts, and handmade objects: stone-carved figurines, heads, pottery etc. He used to pick up all sorts of things on his countryside walks or bought them from the locals (sometimes on the black market).
If you decide to visit, and are also planning to see the National Anthropology Museum, go see Anahuacalli first. Diego Rivera's collection features local objects found in the area of Mexico City, while the National Museum has a collection of items found across the whole country. Visiting both in this order is a great way to see the differences in styles.
Masks and faces
After seeing the Rivera's collection I began to notice the same types of faces on the underground and in the streets of the city, their similarity with those carved in stone, a vivid proof of people's ancestry. A few days later, after the visit to the National Museum, when riding the tube and walking down the streets, I began to see much more face types, now also those similar to the masks and other objects in the 'big museum'. An unforgettable experience. A beautiful connection between history and people living there today. One of my best travel memories so far.
I wasn't taking any photos inside the Anahuacalli, but have some from the Anthropology Museum, you'll find them here: Mexico City.
The Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Home Studio
An absolute gem, well worth a visit!
I don't remember why I didn't take any photos inside, whether it wasn't allowed or for some other reason...
You can find out more about this building on iconichouses.org.
Frida Kahlo Museum
And finally, the best known one, the museum and house of Frida Kahlo in Coyoacan.
Can't find any pics...
